Beverly Eakman, RNN Columnist
Beverly K. Eakman, a former teacher, is best known for her internationally acclaimed texts on education policy, especially Cloning of the American Mind: Eradicating Morality Through Education. The author of dozens of feature-length articles, Mrs. Eakman is a coveted speaker and veteran of some 650 talk shows. She was first to sound the alarm concerning efforts to "psychologize" the learning process and the dangers inherent in cross-matching personal opinions with marketing data via school "testing" programs. Her professional background also includes editor-in-chief of NASA’s newspaper and speechwriter for a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

At first I thought it was a spoof, spurred perhaps by the acerbic jibes of talk-show hosts like Rush Limbaugh or conservative firebrand Ann Coulter. But on closer examination, Nissan’s “Pathfinder” automotive commercial—tag line: “Suppose you could only make left turns…”—appeared oblivious to the fact that their slogan was the stuff of political slapstick. I mean, if they had given this opener to a comedy troupe like “The Capitol Steps,” the cast would have had a field day.

Fixing Our Schools: A "No-Brainer"
Only nine things can go wrong in learning per se: visual and auditory memory, visual identification, spatial and abstract reasoning, mental stamina (i.e., concentration), perceptual speed, hand-eye coordination, and thought-expression synchronization. How many education majors are specializing in any of these?

An Educator Transformed
The Interpretive Literature, which was, and still is, off limits to laypersons, explained why. The EQA’s creators were testing for: the child’s "locus of control"; his "willingness to receive stimuli"; his "amenability to change"; and his inclination to "conform to group goals."
