Let me begin these remarks by emphatically stating that I am an avid dog lover. Shiloh, our family pet beagle, has been a big part of our lives for over a decade now. My four kids have grown up with him. He has been a companion to both my wife and me showing the best attributes of “man’s best friend.” He cuddles with us at night. He friskily plays with us and even performs a few tricks to our amusement. And Shiloh truly shows deep empathy with his big brown eyes whenever his master is in the dumps and feeling blue.

Constitutional Liberty Becomes License in the Land of the Free
Sir William Blackstone, an English jurist in the 18th Century, wrote of liberty in his works, Commentaries on the Laws of England. Blackstone’s writings and thinking were influential in the development of the intellectual life of American founders such as Thomas Jefferson, and, as such, set forth the intellectual background for the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Curbing "Raw Judicial Power"
There is no issue more crucial to the future of this country than the issue of who will be appointed to fill vacancies in the federal judiciary. Our nation is a constitutional republic governed by elected representatives. When such representatives pass laws that are not supported by the public at large we have the ability to change such laws through the political process.

Give Me More Of That "Amazing Grace”
It appears that sometimes Hollywood really does get it. The release of the movie "Amazing Grace" this last weekend exemplifies this. "Amazing Grace" chronicles the story of William Wilberforce, the member of the English Parliament who labored close to fifty years to achieve the abolition of slavery in the English empire. The movie also touches on the relationship between Wilberforce and John Newton, a former captain of a slave ship who, after his conversion to Christianity, authored the famous hymn "Amazing Grace".

A Lifeless State Of The Union
Along with millions of other American citizens I anxiously sat in my living room the night of the State of the Union address waiting to hear words of assurance from President George Bush. The war in Iraq and the war on terror have brought the nation to a level of insecurity not seen since the Carter days and the Iranian hostage crisis. Public uneasiness with the president’s handling of the war is reflected in his very low approval ratings in the public opinion polls.
